Geography of Sofia
Sofia, which is located in the western part of the country, is the largest city in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is in southeastern Europe, in the area known as the Balkan Peninsula. The country's neighbors to the North is Romania, to the East is the Black Sea, to the south are Greece and Turkey and to the west lie the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Mostly hills interspersed with plateaus, with major flatlands in north (Danubian Plateau, extending across entire country) and center (Thracian Plain). Main mountain ranges Balkan (extending across center of country from West to East, forming central watershed of country) and Rhodope (west to east across southern section of country); include two major ranges, Pirin (far Southwest) and Rila (west central).
